Mat Pilates vs. Reformer Pilates: Which is right for you?

Emma Winters

If you’re new to Pilates, one of the first questions you’ll come across is whether to start with mat or reformer classes. While both follow the same core principles—control, precision, and breath—they offer quite different experiences.
The key difference
Mat Pilates
Mat Pilates is the most accessible place to begin. All you need is a mat and your own body weight. Because there’s no equipment to support you, your muscles have to work a little harder to stabilise your body. This can be great for building a strong foundation and improving body awareness. It’s also easy to do at home, making it ideal if you want something simple and flexible.
Reformer Pilates
Reformer Pilates, on the other hand, uses a machine with springs to add resistance and support. This can make some exercises feel easier at first, as the machine helps guide your movements and keeps your alignment in check. At the same time, the adjustable resistance allows for a deeper, more targeted workout as you progress.
One of the biggest differences comes down to support. If you’re dealing with back pain, recovering from injury, or just feel unsure about your form, reformer Pilates can feel more controlled and reassuring. The machine helps you move correctly, which can reduce the risk of strain.
However, if your goal is to build core strength using just your body—and you like the idea of being able to work out anywhere—mat Pilates is a great choice.
Which one is better?
Ultimately, there’s no “better” option. It depends on what you need. If you want convenience and simplicity, go for mat Pilates. If you prefer guided movement and adjustable resistance, the reformer might be the better fit.
The good news? You don’t have to choose forever. Many people find that combining both gives them the best results.
